Ford Escape is known for its fuel economy and it's been one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in America. For the 2009 model year, Escape sees the the biggest change on its four-cylinder engine. The 2009 Ford Escape is equipped with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that replaces the previous 2.3-liter engine. The new engine with six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, delivers best-in-class fuel economy in the small SUV segment with 28 highway/20 city mpg.

The 2.5-liter engine is standard to all trims, except the Limited model which features the same 3.0-liter, V-6 engine. Both the engines produce more power and better fuel economy, with the help of new six-speed transmission. The revised 2.5-liter engine achieves 171-horsepower, up from 153- horsepower (2008) and horsepower increases by 40 horsepower for a total of 240 in 3.0-liter V-6 engine.

The new 6-speed automatic transmission is expected to yield a 1-mpg boost in city and highway fuel economy. The 2009 Ford Hybrid remains the most fuel-efficient SUV, delivering 34 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, a 1 mpg increase versus the 2008 model.
